The Slideluck Youth Initiative is now teaching at Belmont Prepatory School in the Bronx!  The Slideluck Youth Intiative’s Artist Teacher Winston Struye will be teaching 6 classes with “BelPaparazzi” (the name of the photography club as chosen by the students), and above are some slides from his first lesson!

He will be at Belmont Prepatory Highschool for the next 5 weeks and is looking for people to help out!  If you are interested in helping out please get in touch with winston@slideluck.com

Tonight I walked into the most cozy of Jazz Bars, it was called WMC in South Williamsburg.  I only walked in because I had some spare cash on me and I heard music.  I don’t have much to say here, only that I didn’t take a single picture in it.  I thought about getting photos for my instagram, I was going to have my wine glass in the photo as well to “tell the story” to all my social media following.  But, my phone was out of battery.  My only option to watch the dim lights create shadows on the jazz musicians, smile at the cute bartender, adsorb (not just listen) to the music, and breathe in the character that exists outside our electronic means.  Without a picture-taking device on me, I was so much more free to be so much more present.

When you need to be present, and very small jazz club is a great place to do so.

(btw, anyone notice the irony about how I’m posting this on my hyper-feed tumblr?)

Yep, Unicycle Basketball.  This guy was such a legend, Alan was his name.

The other week I did one of those bucket list things and spoke at a conference panel.  I love talks and speeches and panels and conferences and workshops and all those sorts of things, so be a speaker at one felt pretty good.  It was Findspark’s “Find and Follow Your Passion” conference and I spoke in a panel called “Behind the Scenes tips from Social Do-Gooders”, largely on my work with the Slideluck Youth Initiative.  I guess what I spoke about was how I love people, I really do, and I love helping and collaborating and empowering people because I love it when people do the same to me (and people often do).

I’m going to send Alan a copy of the above photo, I hope it empowers him a little bit.

My awesome friend/housemate is Dan Goldberg, and he puts on these super crazy awesome concerts called Mountain Shows. I made a little video about them, check it!

In other news I should have posted up weeks ago, the Slideluck Youth Initiative is 2 weeks into the new semester!  The kids are just as amazing as before, and I feel just even more fortunate to have been teaching some of these same kids for a year now.  Here’s a quick intro to them!

Seems like the whole summer was running from one place to another, I did alot of traveling, but now, back in Brooklyn, I’m running from email to editing photos, but still always moving.  Seems like after spending some time in NYC, your mind learns to “always run."  I mean that in the way that even when I’m on vacation now, in Italy or where-ever, I seem to always be thinking about a new project I should do, how I can better my last project, I person I should contact, some way for me to advance myself forward.  NYC just imprints in your mind that you must always be thinking like this.

Just got back from an amazing couple of weeks in France/Italy with my family.  Above are photos are the Palio in Siena, Italy.  A Palio is a barbaric, ancient horse race around an Italian Piazzo (Plaza).  Palio’s are dangerous for horses and people, and I don’t feel very good about myself for watching it, but, photography-wise, it was cool.

Back in NYC planning to photograph a more PETA-friendly race, a marathon in the Himlayas that I’ll be shooting in November.  If anyone knows a writer that would like to come along with me?

This post is always a bit embarrassing, not the photo, not that at all.  Just, you know, the “I haven’t done a post on here in ages but I haven’t forgotten about you blog!” post.  Like an old friend that you haven’t spoken with in ages but suddenly find a need for, the “I haven’t done anything for you in ages but that doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten about you right….?” friend.

But I really haven’t forgotten about this blog, or any of my old friends, if anything, I love them as much as ever, I’ve just been making other stuff, friend.  But I do LOVE getting back in touch!   Please, let’s do so, here, in Italy, in a pool, with an Italian Farmhouse behind us.

Writing this from an Italian Farmhouse, poolside.
